Graduates of this qualification will be able to:

  • implement customer service and information advice, applying appropriate communication, literacy, numeracy and problem solving skills, to enhance the visitor experience
  • apply workplace practices required of a tourism workplace including: teamwork, team leadership, risk management, and compliance with relevant Acts and health and safety legislation
  • apply in-depth knowledge of New Zealand tourism destinations in terms of characteristics, history, and attributes relevant to visitors to enhance the visitor experience
  • identify and evaluate tourism business systems and processes that enable the delivery of a quality visitor experience and contribute to overall business effectiveness.

Programme Structure and Workload

This programme is delivered full time over 20 weeks or part-time up to 20 weeks over two years.

The programme will include face-to-face practical, face-to-face in class, research, projects, work experience and potential online resources, block courses and learning balances to provide students with the flexibility needed to address pathway goals, current employment and any prior knowledge they bring 

Further Study Paths

The programme also aims to provide a career pathway for those wanting to establish themselves in ‘the business’ of tourism by offering a full year of study when combined with either the New Zealand Certificate in Business (First Line Management) (Level 4, 60 Credits) or the New Zealand Certificate in Business (Small Business) (Level 4, 60 Credits)

Entry Criteria

Applicants must have:

  • attended secondary school for a minimum of four years, or attended secondary school for three years plus at least six months of tertiary training at a minimum of Level 3
  • successfully completed NCEA Level 1 (or equivalent), and attained 40 NCEA credits at Level 3 (or equivalent)
  • applicants for whom English is a second language must meet General or Academic IELTS 5.5 with no band score lower than 5 or NZQA-approved equivalent
  • special entry may be granted where evidence exists that the applicant can successfully complete the programme.
